Frequently Asked Questions
I thought our school already had a tennis team--is this the same thing? A number of elementary and middle schools in our area have successful after-school tennis programs and teams; most of these teams are designed for beginning players, and with limited match-play opportunities. USTA team tennis is not an after-school program, and is geared toward intermediate and advanced players, rather than beginners. USTA team tennis offers more advanced competition, including the opportunity to compete at district, regional, and national levels.
Do I have to sign up with a team? No; you can request a school team for the Intermediate teams, or we can assign you one based on where you are zoned for public high school. For the Advanced teams, we will pool players from our entire area to create teams. Advanced players will be pooled with other players from their club or organization, but these teams may have players from other clubs or organizations on their team.
Do I have to be affiliated with a club or tennis organization to play in the Advanced teams? Yes; in order to have courts, we will require players to be signed up with a club or organization. Players who are not in a club (Farmington, Glenmore, Keswick, Forest Lakes, Fairview, Boar's Head) can sign up with one of the public organizations such as UVA Junior Team or 4 Star Camps Fall Tennis program. If you are not sure which organization is best for you, feel free to contact us.
What if I can't afford to join a club or organization to play in an Advanced team? There are affordable options, such as 4 Star or UVA, which require only a small fee for the season. If players are unable to afford these fees, or the USTA fees, our local USTA affiliate can provide financial assistance. Just contact us for information.
Do I have to join USTA? Yes. USTA junior membership is $20 for a year, and this enables players not only to participate in Junior Team tennis but sign up for tournaments and to receive valuable news and coaching, as well as information on other opportunities for junior tennis.
How do I know whether to sign up for Intermediate or Advanced? Intermediate players should be able to consistently get their serves in, to sustain a rally, and to keep score. Advanced players should have significant USTA tournament experience. If you have questions about which is best for you, contact us and we'll help you choose the best option.
What about practices? Because many of our players are already involved with tennis programs, such as Jefferson League, club or public lessons, etc, additional practices are not mandatory. However, we do offer players the option of special USTA Junior Team tennis practices, with dates and costs below. These practices are recommended especially for players who do not have practices elsewhere.
